BPP Law School launches first High Street Extra
8 February 2010
BPP is launching High Street Extra - an optional programme for any LPC student starting at BPP in September 2010.
This is the first ever BPP programme dedicated entirely to covering the areas of law essential for high street firms. The programme, which is free of charge, is taught through small group sessions and contains a series of talks by external speakers from different areas of high street practice. Students also get relevant pro bono projects and careers provision tailored for high street practice - including networking events and mentors.
Topics covered include: community legal service funding; fast track and small claims in the county court; acting for sole practitioners and partnerships; insolvency and police station representation; personal taxation and residential conveyancing.
Timetabled to fit around the regular LPC and with most content available to download online, students are able to review and revise their work in their own time. On completion, students are awarded a High Street Extra Certificate of Attendance alongside their LPC.
Peter Crisp, Chief Executive of BPP Law School said:
“Many LPC students wish to go into high street or small sized firms and this programme helps them get a feel for the different challenges and expectations they can expect to encounter. For example, high street solicitors tend to manage a great number of files and have a lot of client contact, so we’ve included in the programme additional skills sessions on areas like good practice in file management and advanced interviewing skills. And, as high street firms rely on all staff to take responsibility for the marketing and generation of new business - which may come through word of mouth and local advertising or sponsorship - the programme also covers how to help generate and pitch for new work."
The High Street Extra can be studied at BPP law school centres in Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds, London (Waterloo) and Manchester.
