BPP honours Lord Neuberger at first graduation ceremony

26 March 2009

BPP Law School has honoured Lord Neuberger with the conferment of the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa at its first degree graduation ceremony held on 24 March. The honorary degree was conferred on Lord Neuberger in recognition of his services to the legal profession and in particular his contribution to furthering professional education at the Bar.

The oration for Lord Neuberger was delivered by Richard Wilson QC who recited Lord Neuberger’s stellar career at the Bar and on the Bench, culminating with his appointment as the youngest Law Lord in January 2007.

BPP’s first degree graduation since being granted degree-awarding powers by the Privy Council in September 2007 was held in the Old Hall of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn in London. Twenty-one BPP Law School graduates were conferred with the degrees of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a further twenty-one with the degree of Master of Laws (LLM) by the Chair of BPP’s Academic Council Professor Martyn Jones.

Peter Crisp, Dean of the Law School said: “The grant of degree awarding powers to BPP by the Privy Council was the culmination of many years hard work by the staff of BPP and today we realise the fruits of this hard work by celebrating the success of our first cohort of graduating degree students. This is an historic day in higher education in this country with the first graduates from the only private sector, publicly-owned institution to be granted degree-awarding powers.”
