Travers Smith to send all its trainees to BPP Law School

3 February 2009

BPP Law School today announces that it has agreed with Travers Smith that all the firm’s trainees will study the Legal Practice Course (‘LPC’) exclusively at BPP’s Law School in London from September 2009.

Following an extensive review and consultation process, Travers Smith has selected BPP Law School in London (Holborn) as the sole provider of the LPC to its trainees.

Sending all its trainees to BPP will give Travers Smith a consistent output and improved level of training for its trainees as well as allowing them to mix in class and to network with trainees going to other City firms.

With all its trainees studying the LPC at BPP, Travers Smith will be able to tailor parts of the programme to allow its trainees to gain a deeper understanding of the firm’s clients and practice areas. They will also get to know the firm, and each other, better during the LPC year.

Tom Purton, the partner responsible for graduate recruitment at Travers Smith, said: “This will allow us to have much greater input into the development of our trainees during the LPC year and to align our trainees’ experience on the LPC with the training provided by the firm.”

Peter Crisp, Chief Executive of BPP Law School, said: “BPP has been the provider of choice for many Travers Smith trainees for some time and it is a natural development for the firm to send all its trainees to our law school in Holborn. BPP has many years’ experience of working with firms to produce trainees who are ready to embrace the demands and challenges of a training contract and practice. Designed in conjunction with BPP Business School, our LPC has a strong emphasis on business and finance and provides first-rate training to enable trainees and law firms to maintain their competitive edge and better meet the requirements and expectations of their clients.”

About Travers Smith

Never ones for fanfare, Travers Smith has spent the past 150 years quietly building a reputation for excellence. The key to our reputation is an uncompromising focus and iron grip on quality control. This, when allied to one of the highest retention rates in the City, means we are able to present clients with consistent teams of uniformly excellent lawyers.

Travers Smith currently has around 250 lawyers. We have grown steadily over the years and continue to grow; but it has been a carefully controlled organic growth rather than expansion by merger which could, we believe, lead to a dilution of both our culture and the quality of our service.
